Thank You Michael Jackson

He's an artist that amassed nearly 200 awards for his pop music prowess and philanthropic gestures. His childhood accomplishments with his brothers were eclipsed with one remarkable album entitled, 'Thriller'. It was at about this time Michael Jackson found a way to give back - in a big way.

Critically acclaimed "Kind of Calypso" Harry Belafonte had expressed an idea. He wanted to create a benefit album that would help with famine relief efforts in Africa. Jackson was not the first to be contacted. Lionel Ritchie along with country legend Kenny Rogers were first on the list of contacts. Stevie Wonder would also be added to the list of early talent expressing an interest in developing the project.

It was Lionel Ritchie who asked Michael Jackson to become involved in the project. It was this duo that moved the project forward and crafted the original song, "We Are the World". This collaboration has resulted in 62 million dollars being sent to Africa to aid in the vision of Belafonte and perpetuated by the enthusiasm of Michael Jackson and others.

Following this effort in 1985 Jackson began assuming a greater responsibility to give back.

Jackson has the distinction of assisting the most charitable organizations among all pop musicians through monetary or sponsorship support.

Did you know?

In 1984 Jackson funded the purchase of needed equipment for a 19-bed-unit for leukemia victims at Mount Senai New York Medical Center.

Jackson donated all $1.5 million received from Pepsi for burns he received in the filming of a television advertisement to the Michael Jackson Burn Center for Children.

Jackson developed a scholarship fund perpetuated with money derived from a $1.5 million Jackson endowment that funds this scholarship opportunity for African American students.

All proceeds from the single "Man in the Mirror" were donated to Camp Ronald McDonald.

Proceeds from various Jackson concerts have been dedicated to relief of underprivileged children in the immediate region of the concert.

In the 90's Jackson developed the "Heal the World" Foundation that has provided millions of dollars in assistance on a wide variety of efforts including famine relief, drug and abuse counseling and assisting the underprivileged.

Even following his death some of his personal effects such as his iconic glove and hat were scheduled be auctioned off to assist a program called MusiCares.

Jackson was further honored following his death with the 2009 Save The World Award for his lifelong commitment to giving back.

In life, Jackson was unmistakable in both presence and style. In death his music was revived to ignite a new generation with music from an unbelievable era in history. His will provided for additional funding for charities.

Multiple sources agree that Jackson was extremely instrumental in paving the way for racial diversity in the field of music and in how that music was visualized by way of television. His groundbreaking work on videos like Thriller, Bad and Billie Jean suddenly opened the doors for black musicians to find television airtime for their music.

There were so many things Michael Jackson did that could be listed as firsts in the industry, but in most cases he gave and offered his support because this was an extension of who he was even when the cameras weren't clicking and the media had gone home. No matter how often he was misunderstood he was still quietly working to deliver a message of how things could and should be better.

In both life - and death - he succeeded.

Give in to Me

October 4, 2009 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comments Off

The song "Give In to Me" is the tenth track on Michael Jackson's 1991 studio album Dangerous. An interesting fact for the MJ trivia types is that members of Guns N' Roses were involved. Slash, Gilby Clarke, and Teddy Andreadis were all in the video.

Two other bits of trivia are that the single was never released in North America or Asia, and the pyrotechnics in the video are computer generated.

Length = 5:28

Propofol

October 1, 2009 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comments Off

There is a word that will be added to our vocabularies. Propofol. It is a surgical anesthetic, and an autopsy report suggests that in combination with three other sedatives, it probably stopped Michael's breathing and killed him.

The report is not official (it was leaked somehow) but it sounds very plausible to this writer. We can now start to understand why this has become a homicide investigation, rather than a more simple death.

The autopsy report went on to say that although Michael has some issues, he was in reasonably good health. Now fans everywhere will mourn even the more, as it is quite probable that Michael Jackson could have continued to entertain us for years to come. It would seem that his personal doctor's negligence may have robbed Michael from us early.

Gary, Indiana

Gary, Indiana, is an industrial city close to Chicago. It is also where Michael Jackson was born and raised. He spent the first 11 years of his life there

Recently, members of the singer’s family watched as local performers staged a medley of his greatest hits, and youngsters mimicked his famous “moonwalk”.

One of the most famous people in this special event was Jesse Jackson, the civil rights leader, who told 6,000 devotees "This is the origin of it all". Jesse went on to say that this is where Michael first learned to dance and sing.

Mayor Rudy Clay later unveiled a 7 foot memorial to Gary's famous son.

Michael Jackson Honoured by Stevie Wonder

July 1, 2009 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comments Off

Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson both started their careers in Motown. In fact, they knew each other in the early 1970s. Michael used to ask Stevie lots of questions, and they played air hockey against each other.

Jackson's life ended up fading into weirdness and scandals, while Wonder continues to add to his legendary status. Stevie was in Montreal, Canada, this week for that city's Jazz Festival.

During a news conference, Stevie performed a version of his 1984 hit, I Just Called to Say I Love You, complete with some new lyrics for Michael.

Advice for Michael's fans? Wonder urged them to ignore all the negative, and concentrate on the music that MJ left us all.

As news of Jackson's death dominated TV, Mr. Wonder was inspired to write lyrics to a new song called In the Arms of God. That one is for Michael.

Michael Jackson is Gone

June 27, 2009 · Filed Under Uncategorized · 1 Comment

Michael Jackson - Gone But Never Forgotten

Michael Jackson, talented but also controversial, will never be forgotten. He will live on in his music and his videos.

And my goal in life is to give to the world what I was lucky to receive: the ecstasy of divine union through my music and my dance.

On Thursday, June 25, 2009 Michael Jackson passed from this life to the next. He had been rehearsing for his 50 concert tour, already sold out, when a suspected heart attack claimed him. What did he leave behind?

In legal and financial terms - a mess.

In music and video - a legacy. Like his monster hit, Thriller, the video version of which is shown below from YouTube.

The reactions to his performances over the years were spectacular. Just consider the ticket sales on his announced 50 show tour. After all these years, and after all the controversy, Michael Jackson could still bring them in.

Michael Jackson married rock, pop, R & B, and dance music in order to smash radio formats and racial barriers in the media. He influenced many artists, including his sister Janet, as well as Whitney Houston, Weird Al Yankovic, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Black-Eyed Peas, and Chris Brown.

Michael was one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. He received 13 Grammy Awards, 13 number one singles, and the sale of 750 million albums worldwide.

He also raised millions of dollars for beneficial causes through his foundations.

Michael Joseph Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana to a working-class family on August 29, 1958. He was the 7th of 9 siblings, the other 8 being Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Randy, and Janet.

Michael Jackson - King Of Pop

Michael got his musical start in a group formed of himself and 4 of his brothers. A musical prodigy, his singing and dancing talents were amazingly mature and he soon became the dominant voice and focus of "The Jackson 5."

Solo success for Michael was inevitable, and by the 80s he had become infinitely more popular than his brotherly group. Record sales consistently orbited, culminating in the biggest-selling album of all time, "Thriller" in 1982.
